Thyroid Nodules

Overview

Thyroid nodules are lumps or growths that form within the thyroid gland. Most thyroid nodules are benign, but proper evaluation is important to rule out malignancy and to plan the right level of monitoring or treatment.

Symptoms

• Often no symptoms at all - found incidentally on examination or imaging
• Occasionally a visible or palpable neck lump
• Difficulty swallowing or breathing if the nodule is large

Causes & Risk Factors

Thyroid nodules can arise from iodine deficiency, chronic thyroiditis, or genetic factors. Rarely, a nodule may be due to thyroid cancer, which is why appropriate evaluation matters.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis typically involves a thyroid ultrasound and TSH testing. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) may be recommended when a nodule has suspicious features on ultrasound.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the nodule's size, features and function, and may include:

• Observation with periodic ultrasound for low-risk nodules
• Medication if linked to a functional thyroid problem
• Referral for surgical evaluation if a nodule is large, growing or suspicious
